The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives, the West Virginia State Police, the Mountain Region Drug Task Force, the Barbour County Sheriffs Office, and the Randolph County Sheriffs Office investigated the case. Several years later the Motel 6 has become a physical embodiment of the drug and crime problem that has plagued Randolph County.
